Loved as an icon for sustainable tourism, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve has prioritised families since they first opened their doors in 1996. Grootbos strives to encourage children to learn about the symbiotic relationship between animals and plants, instilling enthusiasm and an excitement for them to explore nature on a regular basis.
Living in an age of technology that often sees families disconnected from nature, Grootbos offers an opportunity for families to reconnect and discover the natural wonder of the Cape Floral Kingdom while enjoying the luxurious offering of 5-star accommodation.
Grootbos understands the hunger for education and adventure that each child has within, which is why they aspire to create a fulfilling experience for the entire family – starting with the lodge itself.
The Garden Lodge, which has earned its reputation for being the perfect family retreat, consists of 11 comfortable yet undeniably luxurious freestanding suites. A home away from home, the lodge is surrounded by fragrant fynbos gardens and offers sweeping vistas over the bay. Each suite comes complete with canopied beds, spacious en-suite bathrooms, a separate lounge, a wood-burning fireplace and wrap-around timber deck.
Conveniently situated close to the activity areas, dining room and swimming pool, parents in need of a break, can put their feet up and relax, whilst taking advantage of the babysitting facilities on offer.
The food and wine offerings at Grootbos are another important aspect of the experience – including the culinary offerings for the children. Grootbos offers specially designed kiddie’s menus, which change on a daily basis according to the fresh and seasonal produce available. The whole family can sit around the table, sharing a meal, or parents can enjoy a romantic dinner in the restaurant while child minders take care of the children in the playroom.
As Grootbos is a family-run business, they pride themselves in understanding the requirements of families traveling with children. Their aim is to keep the little ones busy and happy during their stay.
Through a multitude of activities, Grootbos provides the opportunity to discover the natural wonders of the area in an environment that is both enjoyable and educational for the whole family. The aim is to create an exhilarating and interactive experience, exposing guests to the abundance of bird and marine life in nature’s paradise.
Holidaying parents can relax, at peace with the knowledge that their children are in the safe hands of specially trained guides, who will lead the children on exciting treasure hunts to the beach and rock pools, on fynbos safaris through the reserve or beneath a dense canopy of leaves in the milkwood forest. Collected treasures – be it an insect, shell or porcupine quill – are brought back to the activities room for identification and discussion.
A dedicated playground with paddocks, a petting zoo and jungle gym is another favourite among the little guests. When not cuddling a bunny, feeding a piglet or collecting eggs from the resident free-range chickens for breakfast; children are free to enjoy guided daily horse rides through the reserve’s 2 500 hectares of indigenous fynbos.
Grootbos is renowned for implementing projects that both empower and support the local community and environment. Guests are included in these projects in various ways, teaching them about sustainable practices. Growing the Future Projects and the organic vegetable garden provide children with the chance to discover the origins of food for themselves and learn of the importance of sustaining the delicate balance between man and nature.
Rainy days, meanwhile, provide the opportunity to bake biscuits in the kitchen alongside the lodge’s skilled chefs. A cinema room, complete with foosball and pool tables, keeps teens happy while an extensive library of books and DVDs is available for in-suite entertainment.
Grootbos proudly offers parents all the comforts of a five-star holiday retreat – from accommodation, food, wine and activities – while their little ones are kept busy with safe, engaging nature-based activities and experiences. An immersive African adventure for the whole family where guests leave with an unforgettable experience consisting of relaxation, education and wonder.
